Last month’s flavor was Schwarzenegger and this month it is Anthony Weiner, democratic US Congressman who has been embroiled  in controversy in the wake of posting lewd pictures for his female followers on Twitter. The scandal called Weinergate was all over the telly from the last 3 weeks.

The usual politician’s drill took place. At first he denied, suggesting someone had hacked his account. Then this someone became a political opponent. Lots of boos and media coverage followed. But Wiener was not done. After everything was failing around him, he said the image might have been doctored. And finally when all avenues were exhausted then inevitably he had to admit to his wrongdoing by starting with the words

“I haven’t been completely honest with myself”

Ah now politician’s statement containing the word honest, irony that. His work records are mixed. And one of the funnier aspects is that he was critical of UN diplomats not paying NYC parking tickets while at the same time he ran up $2,180 in unpaid Washington DC parking violations even running with expired registration plates on his car at one time.

Despite this public admission he refused to resign. The American media had a field day. And they also held a poll to decide whether he should resign or not.  Just goes to show power can corrupt and politicians are headless gaffers irrespective of any country they are born. Anthony Wiener has since resigned.

So we are in a Mexican restaurant the other day, with a couple of Indians and an American. My colleague MP starts to narrate an incident about food. Now MP is a know-all…. apparently he used to be a professor in a college in Gujarat. He is interesting to listen to but sometimes he is grating with his all-round opinion on just about anything under the sun.   An American who sits opposite to him is all doe-eyed as if he is ready to get his lesson from Confucius himself. Now I don’t remember the whole story since my attention span for MP’s self important notions, is truly abysmal much like the politicians dozing and having a snoozefest in our Lok Sabha.

The topic has two keywords – food and tissue paper . We as Indians know that a tissue is something that is used when you have a runny nose, or you dropped something on the table, you need to clean up. So not a big deal if you are an Indian and the desis around the table already look around with impatience towards the waiter to get us our burritos especially with MP in his typical style just beating about the bush without getting to the point. Oh, but wait…. the American is just beginning to squirm. The Burrito is the last thing on his mind.

The food arrives and we dig in. MP digs in too, but even a mouth full of rice, beans , peppers and cheese isn’t enough to stop the Rambo of “I shall explain to you the hypothesis, theory and law behind our very existence”. Such trivial things like annoyed expressions, overacting of boredom theatrics do not bother MP who will continue to talk even if a man has half a ear. I have long lost interest but the burrito is kinda not that tasty so I have to order hot sauce. Meanwhile though since the human ears do not have an open and close button I am forced to listen.

MP by has now made Galileo and Einstein look like mere children in the scientific playground. We are used to this, however, everytime the words tissue and food are used in the same sentence, the American winces, flinches and makes a face that says he is just about to puke his burrito out on to his plate. He fiddles with his fork, his thumbs twiddle , his face is a riddle and I am afraid he is about to piddle.

Figures that the Americans call a tissue paper as a napkin, fair enough and a tissue paper is something you use in the toilet. Since MP’s world renowned explanations are so circuitous, they are like the foreplay before the main act. But before climax is reached, the American can’t take anymore of these life-threatening symptoms and he ejaculates prematurely which means he butts in.

“I think MP, you mean napkin, don’t you?”

MP shakes his head in disgust, what the f*** is a napkin, he asks.  Disturbing MP is equivalent to if someone had stolen Newton’s apple away and crushed it to make fresh apple juice, leaving the great English scientist with no fruits to base his theories on.

The American clarifies “napkin that you use to clean your mouth.”

“Ah, yes yes,” MP says in a petulant manner finally looking at who has interrupted his gospel. He is agape at the American. He quickly downgrades his aggressive look to one that is similar to a moustached  rascala villain who is about to get beaten up by Rajnikanth.

“Oh you are soooo right Mr. American, I meant the napkin all this while. You see I have just come from India, my wife, she is been here a long while and is a lot more modern than me. And so as I was saying……………”

Now it is my turn to feel irritated. I felt miffed at MP for accepting the Amreekan’s opinion without informing him that in countries other than Uncle Sam, we have different terms that are just as correct or the terms are used interchangeably. Just because he calls it a napkin doesn’t mean you clean his backside,  and I don’t care if you are using a napkin, tissue or whatever to accomplish that. What has modernity got to do with calling something by a different name. Why the justification that oh my wife is more modern than me, which she might as well be and I don’t know how she ended up with him in the first place but that’s beside the point.

We Indians love to denigrate and sully our own and our country’s reputation just to gain a few brownie points. In another incident in my friend’s company, a boss asked his Indian subordinate about how was Mumbai as a place to visit in May. My friend who is a true Mumbaikar said May will be extremely hot but a cool cab will get you to all places comfortably. On the other hand, the Indian subordinate immediately said, Mumbai is a tough and polluted city, if you stand outside for half an hour , you will be blackened blah blah. This is downright silly and such people who mislead or dissuade potential tourists should be made to walk naked in the Frigid Canadian winter.

I for one never miss an opportunity to educate the people here about culture back home because all they know about India is through Slumdog Millionaire and that isn’t a good thing. If only Indians here would stop supporting that impression.

President Obama's 3-day visit to India was more business-oriented than political. For the sake of diplomacy he paraphrased India's concerns over Pakistan and the constant US aid to our neighbor. by saying that a stable Pakistan is better for India. However what he means and US foreign policies in the past have always meant that a stable Pakistan is a good counter force to undermine India's speedy development. An unstable Pakistan right now is too busy handling its own issues and not able to concentrate on spreading terrorism in India. Here is to our armed forces and intelligence men who have kept danger at bay despite the constant threats that we hear everyday.

Also it is interesting to note that while his fellow Americans pronounce Pakistan as P[æ]kist[æ]n as in cat, Obama says Pa:kista:n as most Indians would say it. Hmmm... yes I know, totally jobless I am.

India is in the centre of attention once again.

First the Ayodhya verdict, which thankfully has passed on quite peacefully and once again proved that democracy still lives on in good health in a country that is plagued by population problems. There was peace advocated in the Jummah sermons, while the victorious group has quite rightly demonstrated a controlled felicity to what has occurred. PC, the man famous for irresponsible statements has broken the habit of a lifetime by announcing something sensible on behalf of the Government. Kudos to the Judiciary and the powers that be, who have handled this with foresight and some would say proper neutrality.

Second, India and Australia are playing a test series(the Border-Gavaskar trophy) which is reason enough to be exciting if only it wasn't that short. But come to think of it, we might not even had a series in the first place and instead would have been pointlessly following seven inconsequential ODIs across the length and breadth of the country. It will be interesting to see how Dhoni and Raina adjust their game to the longer version after the heady high of winning the Champions League.

Next up are the Commonwealth Games New Delhi, a true proud moment for a nation that has made giant strides and takes one more leap of faith by hosting a global event. Despite all the controversy surrounding the event, I am really looking forward to this one. The pictures (wrongly, enviously and foolishly pointed by the naysayers as CGI) that are being released belatedly by our crappy media are spectacular. The facilities look world-class and showcases the might and influence that India now exercises in the world. Afridi, the ball muncher has made another ill-timed dig at Cricket India when he would be better off taking care of some urgent issues in his own team. Reminds me of the old Onida commercial - Owner's pride, neighbor's envy. Can't wait for the opening ceremony on Sunday.

On the personal front there is something special coming up after a week. Hopefully that will culminate in a delightful weekend and reignite the spark that has been missing for a while. Also Navratri starts next week which sends Jerseyites in a dancing frenzy - non-gujjus included. After leaving India, I have hardly felt, let alone celebrated Garba and Diwali or any other major Indian festival with enthusiasm. It just doesn't feel right here. But with autumn beginning to show its colors literally, the leaves beginning to say farewell to the trees before rustling to the ground, the heavens opening up more often, and the cooler refreshing weather, the timing is just about perfect to indulge in some heavy duty cultural activity.

Is it a good time to be an Indian , you bet it is.. and always will be.

I have to say I agree with this one. The game of cricket is in itself so rich and layered that we don't need to resort to such gimmicks and blindly follow the American way of commercializing sport. Selling the game as B-Grade entertainment is certainly not the way. The following blog post was posted originally on Cricinfo's surfer.

The IPL's reliance on foreign cheerleaders reinforces unsavoury Indian stereotypes about sex and women, writes Kanishk Tharoor in the Guardian.

I'm not offended by cheerleading, more bored by it. In any grown-up context, it offers a dispiriting definition of both leadership and cheer. Many cricket fans, including myself, would be happy to see the (metaphorical) back of these cheerleaders. Their twists and pumps add nothing to what is, in truth, a wonderful sporting spectacle. They are a reminder of the ocean of inanities that commercial modernity promises our lives, drowning all occasions in froth. First the fall from grace, then the flood. (Source : The Guardian)

Another city, another attack.

While we wasted our time mulling over SRK's credibility and Shiv Sena's lack of it, the cowards struck again. This time it was the progressive city of Pune that bore the brunt of this pathetic attack. This was unfortunately just another in a series of carefully orchestrated attacks on our economic heartland. This seems to be the only agenda of the scumbags behind this. With the Commonwealth games around the corner, the terror-mongers are hell bent on destroying India's image as a safe place for foreigners.

I wonder why we are such a soft target. Yes, it is not possible to avert disaster by guarding each and every place religiously but can not be a campaign organized by the authorities to educate people about being alert. Our stations, malls, airports and other public places should be plastered with "report if suspicious" messages so that the significance of safety is drilled loud and clear. The Police also should not ridicule false alarms.

The biggest enemy as they say lies within. The Sena won't let the Aussies play. The media has shown a thumbs down to the IPL 2010. The Deccan Chargers have taken the IPL to court over the omission of Hyderabad as an IPL venue. No tournament or event of international stature is allowed to run smoothly because of this political hegemony. Hopefully this ghastly incident unites the citizens of India and makes them spit on dirty politics and terrorism.

Terror shall not and will not win.

So the controversy over the exclusion of Pakistani cricketers in the IPL rages on. But the Pakis love to talk without the walk. Their performance in Australia speaks volumes about their abilities. It justifies the franchises' decision on cricketing grounds. One might argue that they are playing 50 over cricket and 20 over cricket is different. But you need the same basic skills. The bowling is looking increasingly toothless, the batting is in shambles while the less said about the fielding, the better.

What irks me here is some of our esteemed "stars", the two Khans and Bachchan, not satisfied with their horror show on Phir Mile Sur Mera Tumhara, decided to visit the theme of national disintegration again. So they spoke what they thought, it is a free country after all. Admittedly our media too made a mess of things and could have handled this topic with some sense. But that was the optimist in me. Does our media have any other job ? Another jobless nut called Ball Taank re - also mouthed his opinion for the umpteenth time. Taankre's own family has given up on him while the UP/Biharis are sh**ting all over his unbridled love of the Marathi Manoos. His sentiments would be better served to win some seats at the Sabha and not hog headlines with useless statements. A great city like Mumbai is what it is because of its immigrants and settlers, which mirrors any great city of this world. It is the culture which results from the mix, that defines what the place becomes. Although his views might still hold sway in Mumbai politics, the cartoonist has definitely seen better days, no?

That said, I agree in part with Taankre's views. After Mumbai 08', I would not not like any Pakistani cricketer to come an earn money in what is after all an Indian Tournament financed by Indian money. Although this is a simplistic view of things motivated by perhaps a misplaced sense of jingoism on my part, I would once again draw attention to the first paragraph of this post. Pakistani cricketers do "not" deserve to be part of this tournament on the basis of their recent displays. Time to blood some young talent in the Indian ranks.

One year from the horrific attacks and the perpetrators still roam at large. India still remains a soft state, one very much vulnerable to attack.

My friend and one of the followers of this blog, remarked that India is the only country where all people hate each other. The Marathas are fighting with the north indians, the south indians look down upon the northies and vice versa. But despite all this problems, India continues to make progress and the largely young population of the country who fortunately remains above all this regional crap is standing up and making a difference which is a testimony to our socio-cultural and educational set-up.

Everyone of us as Indians should come together, forget our differences and take a moment to pay homage to the great men who put down their lives to bring back peace not only to Mumbai but to the whole nation and Indians all over the world. A great country needs our support.

Today the world commemorated the Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in memory of those who died in WWI. During those years of war, Indian political leaders had stupidly allowed our citizens to fight for the British in Europe and elsewhere. In all 140,000 men from the British Indian Army served on the Western Front and nearly 700,000 in the Middle East. Casualties of Indian soldiers totaled 47,746 killed and 65,126 wounded during World War I*. And all this show of loyalty to the empire, just because the Congress "expected" the goras to hand them self-governance. What a piece of trash. What were they thinking?

All of 91 years later, we still show our weakness in taking strong steps and continue to bow down to corruption, communalism and terrorism. Let us not forget the valor shown by our soldiers in war who have sacrificed so much dear to them so that we can enjoy what is dear to us. Let us mark the moment..

July 26th was Kargil Vijay Diwas, the tenth anniversary of the great victory that we achieved over Pakistani infiltrators in Kargil, the final battle being on the now famous Tiger Hill.

In May-June 1999 I was just another student studying in the 12th standard. In all honesty maybe I was too young, too unpatriotic or just too immature to care about what was happening. Yup I was right up there with many others who have taken our freedom for granted.

Right at that very moment it was interesting to see all the reports and visuals on television. It was very much like when CNN had taken over television to broadcast the first Gulf war.I remember celebrities coming out and doing charity shows in fulfilling their role towards the country. Reporters jumped in and out of dangerous locations with explosions and shelling behind them. It was all very exciting.

But now that I see and read about it, it excites me no more. The media has always glamorized war and indirectly glorified it too. Yes, we need the telly for giving us up to date reports, the statistics, the consequences and the aftermath. But why the manufactured drama? Why the constant need to remind us that our soldiers are brave tough men who are always smiling through the challenges that threaten their life. We know they are and we are mighty proud of it.

This is then the very platform that our fat arsed politicians choose to highlight their party’s contributions to war victories but fail to take accountability for what caused the country to go to war in the first place or why they are too meek to respond to aggression. Once again, a decade down the line, their lack of commitment or gratefulness to the role of our soldiers in Kargil, was evident yesterday when the authorities of the Panchkula administration failed to turn up for memorial service. Even in Delhi, the arrangements were low key. According to the media apparently, the Kargil victory was achieved under the NDA government so the Congress was a bit hesitant in performing a ceremony C’mon fellas atleast feign your jingoism.

It is ignominious that even after ten years, our politicians still fight over bragging rights as to whose victory was it? I know the Kargil war is not a cause for celebration especially as India was the one who had more casualties but it made the victory all the more remarkable. It is so demoralizing for our Army that the central government trivializes their achievements on political grounds. Sadly, we still haven't learned our lessons.

I salute you all Martyrs and Jawans for the gallantry you have shown in all the wars that India has fought (or rather been forced to fight). I am proud of the Indian Army. Jai Hind. !

As if falling and graying hair weren’t clues enough, I get up today morning with a back and neck ache. Ouch ! it was painful and is still hurting as I write this entry. Ofcourse, there is no recession to blame for this but only my own stupid bed and perhaps China…..How? Just read on….

I have two beds at my place. One is a double bed kept specially for those eternally optimistic beliefs about meeting someone at the club or pub and one thing leads to another kind of fairy tales ;). Ok alright I am kidding. The truth of the matter is that two months ago I was living with two roomies who had to leave suddenly leaving this rotten piece of equipment behind. So when I moved I decided to bring this along. I also have my own bed but that is currently being used by my maata-shri. So now I sleep on this piece of junk whose springs have disintegrated like some trashy “Made in China” toy. Hey wait a minute , isn’t this bed made in China? Or for that matter everything from that battery in your mobile phone to the 50 inch of complex electronics hanging on your wall

China, a country that claims and is claimed by many to be the next super power by everyone and anyone who possesses a knowledge of current affairs even though those so called expert people might now even know their own neighbours. Just to give you a simple example….we bought a set of knives from Target stores obviously made with the Sino prowess. Unsurprisingly they were not too expensive but when it came to using them, they were so pathetic I might well have used my car keys to cut something. I doubt if they are even good enough to make an incision on my finger which ofcourse I didn’t try otherwise my mom would have woken up the neighborhood which incidentally does include a Chinese. Wonder if he would have proved his point then. And this is the case with most of the things they make, I guess durable and reliable does not feature in their manufacturing dictionary. Even the great democracy of India awoke to this bullshit and ousted the CPI.

I was listening to the FM and the presenter had invited Kapil Dev over for his comment on the Lahore attacks. And Kapil paaji was in ever so anti BCCI mode again. But his comment on the Lahore incident took the cake. This is what he had to say

'We have to find some solution to this situation and find the good things in Pakistan and uplift them for all to see'

For all the sympathy I have for Pakistani cricket but this was a joke. As if he was interested in the upliftment of the masses in the first place. Talk about vested interests. Apparently ICL has more viewers in Pak than India and perhaps that reminded Kapil Dev that uplifting bank balances would be a better idea. We'll see Paki cricket later (if and when that happens now)

Its barely been a week since the Mumbai police filed a chargesheet against Kasab and other perpetrators behind the November 26 attacks, the terrorists are at it again. This time they targeted my favorite game. It was past midnight here and I was watching Sehwag going hammer and tongs against the Kiwis, when the news filtered in that the Sri Lankan team had been attacked in Lahore. It was shocking and I did not feel like watching the game anymore. All those thoughts about sportsmen will not be attacked seemed hollow and baseless as the Indian government's claims on providing security to our major cities.

NDTV went as far to report that perhaps this attack was meant to be for the Indian team who were scheduled to tour but fortunately canceled it. This was frightening itself and I am just shuddering at the thought of what if the Indian players were on that bus. Just imagine a bruise to SRT(revered as God by certain people) would have perhaps brought out unequivocal cries of war with our neighbors.

Just wishing a speedy recovery to all Sri Lankan players and officials affected by this cowardly act . I leave you with this excellent article on rediff - http://in.rediff.com/cricket/2009/mar/03prem-panicker-sri-lanka-team-attacked-in-pakistan.htm

As I type this, I read that the IPL is in doubt as well. Damn!!
